Auburn Baseball goes 2-1 on opening weekend

Auburn’s opening weekend of the 2014 season ended with a solid performance at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. Auburn opened the classic with a 4-0 shutout victory against Indiana State. It was Auburn’s first Opening Day shutout since 2007. It was also Sunny Golloway’s first game as the Head Coach of the Tigers. The victory was lead behind Senior RHP Dillion Ortman who tossed 5 scoreless innings in the victory.

Game 2 saw the Tigers lose a very tough game to Ohio State 1-0. Neither teams could really get anything going on offense.

Auburn used the game 2 loss as motivation as they defeated Connecticut 7-3 in the third and final game of the classic. Freshman RHP Keegan Thompson struck out nine batters in his Auburn debut vs. Connecticut. Auburn had five freshman start in the Opening Day lineup.

This team is loaded with some young talent and has a chance to do some special things as the year goes on. Auburn just has to buy into the small ball mentality of Coach Sunny Golloway and minimize mistakes and the Tigers will be rewarded.

Auburn’s Opening Day game at Plainsman Park is Wednesday, February 19 against Alabama State. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
